09.29.2008 | Robin Thicke's 'Something Else' lays on the love

Robin Thicke, Something Else
* * * (out of four) LAYING IT ON…
In R&B, it's been an unusually good year for sensitive guys and the women who love them. On the heels of Ne-Yo's The Year of the Gentleman and born-again monogamist Usher's Here I Stand comes Something Else, Thicke's love letter to his wife and unabashed homage to old-school lover men.
Marvin Gaye's impact is heard first and clearest in Thicke's delicately applied cream-and-whiskey tenor and the shivery falsetto that he reaches for on You're My Baby and dips back into throughout the album. But a whole array of Motown and Philly faves also inform tunes ranging from the disco-licious title track and thumping Magic to the glowing, horns-laced The Sweetest Love.
If Thicke doesn't offer the freshness or effortless fluidity of his influences, he's at least a savvy and resourceful student — and a great date, no doubt. — Elysa Gardner

09.28.2008 | The Source Interview
"It may have seemed like Robin Thicke came out of nowhere a couple of years ago, but the truth is he’s put in years of work. The Source spent the day with the “Lost Without You” crooner who talked about losing friends because of money drama, being on his own at 17 and all the work he had to put in to get his wife.
ROBIN THICKE: I began with Interscope Records when I was 16, off and on. I was 23 when Andre Harrell–we made my first album together called “The Beautiful World” up at Interscope. Because they spent so much money [on the project], it was critical for it to be an industry success as it was a commercial success. [And] They were having trouble trying to figure out what to do with me next on the label. So after after a long time, finally Pharrell came in and was like, “Hey, what’s up with this kid Robin Thicke? What are you doing to him?”
He’s crazy, ya know. He just asked Jimmy Iovine about me and Iovine said [to me later], “Come on in, Pharrell and I wanted to sit with you, talk to you.” So I came in. I played “Lost Without You” and for Pharrell that was it. He was like, “Forget the rest.”
MC: Uh huh. I don’t know if any of that recorded.
ROBIN THICKE: Haha! ….let me help this kid out. He’s the coolest, ya know, real calm and very intelligent.
MC: Have you heard the N.E.R.D. album?
ROBIN THICKE: Yeah, that shit is bangin’.
MC: Yeah.
ROBIN THICKE: I introduced him a few weeks ago in London.
MC: Oh, word?!
ROBIN THICKE: Yeah, yeah it was hot cause they were performing with Kenna and somebody else, and Pharrell–
MC: Another dude who sings!
ROBIN THICKE: Yeah, Pharrell, back last year, when I did my show in London, he flew out just to do a song with me. And then I was out there, introducing him and I was like, ‘This is crazy!’ Now I get to introduce Pharrell. It was pretty cool.
MC: This Star Trak [crew] is a pretty eclectic catch.
ROBIN THICKE: Yeah definitely.
MC: You, Kenna, N.E.R.D., well Pharrell, I guess.
ROBIN THICKE: Pharrell represents crossing boundaries and breaking genres. Pharrell is the first Pharrell we haven’t seen. He’s this skateboarding, fashion, producing, writing and singing–like Pharrell was the first of his kind in a way. And I think that he represents things that are original and different you know?" 09.18.2008 | Rolling Stone Review: Something Else

"At a time when most R&B Casanovas, taking their cues from rappers, are thuggish egomaniacs — or, in the case of R. Kelly, just plain freaky — Robin Thicke offers a vanilla alternative. (No pun intended.) His largely self-produced third album picks up where his big 2007 hit "Lost Without U" left off, with Thicke cooing in an airy falsetto that holds promises of honesty, fidelity and long nights in the boudoir focused solely on Her Pleasure. The music is a lush, louche swirl of strings, congas and Fender Rhodes that flaunts its debts to Marvin Gaye ("You're My Baby"), classic disco ("Something Else") and Philly soul ("Magic"). As a utilitarian background soundtrack, it'll do nicely — lots of babies will be made to ballads like "Cry No More." But Thicke's songwriting teeters into self-parody, and his mixed metaphors — "We're just spaceships in the night/Ripping the clothes off of the past/Making a new path" — could break the mood of the randiest couples. 3 out of 5 stars."
