10.08.2008 | Robin Thicke Hoped To 'Achieve Some Healing' On Something Else

For his LP Something Else, Robin Thicke found inspiration from two places: Motown records and the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. He hopes to capture that nostalgic flair on the album.

"I mean with a little wind in our sails after having the success on the last album, we were all excited to go in [to the studio]," he said. "We wanted to have all the equipment set up, all the percussion instruments and all the guitars and have everybody ... just like kids in a candy store."

This album, for Thicke, was about finding some peace and coming to terms with a world that he sees as unfair at times. "I really just wanted to achieve some healing, and I needed to be healed," he said. "I needed to believe in myself, and my wife — being an African-American actress and being African-American in this world — she faces a lot of challenges that I, as a white man, [don't] have to face. ... Having sympathy and understanding for what she goes through made me wanna write songs."

Thicke also wasn't afraid to mix business and pleasure when he sat down to work on the album. For one song, "Beautifully Imperfect," he sought the advice of his wife, actress Paula Patton. "I wrote it with my music partner, who plays guitar, and my wife actually threw in a few lines here and there. ... I was at the house writing the song, and I had the chorus and some of the verse, but she was struggling with her business and the opportunities in her business because of the color of her skin."

Working together was a natural fit for the couple, and with subject matter that hit so close to home, the song was born from a very organic place. "We just started talking about 'Don't we wish that that those things would go away and we could live in a different world and a different society?' and that's where that song comes from," he said.

Thicke didn't feel the need to impress anyone when he was making Something Else. Why? Because Thicke feels pressure to be good no matter what. "I've always put so much pressure on myself, nobody could ever do that to me," he said.

"I'm never happy with what I'm doing, and I can't wait to get to the next one so I can do even better — even though some people say this is my best," he added. "That's the job of an artist — to leave the past behind and bear down onto the future to try to make something even better."

10.06.2008 | My New Crush: Robin Thicke
Someone got their swirl on last night with the smoothest, coolest White boy ever to grace the cover of Vibe. No, wait. That was Eminem. The cutie I’m referring to is Robin Thicke, and too bad for Vibe; he’s a lot sexier and way more loveable than the “8 Mile” rapper. Other than being two White guys who like hip hop, their hotness radar is not alike.

Ever since the release of “Lost Without U,” and the album it came from, I’ve been hot on the R&B/retro soul singer. His love songs are sexual-healing, ego-boosting, soul-searching classics that open your heart, and make your body ache for something or someone special – for happiness.

So, it’s no surprise that I’m eagerly awaiting the release of his new album, “Something Else.” Only this time, Thicke will not only be opening my heart but also my mind.

BET.com: What can fans expect from your new work?

Thicke: My last album, I was talking about what I was going through, my life and my relationship. And this album I’m talking about what other people are going through. After seeing the world and meeting so many people, so much more than I’ve ever met in my life, I just realized how small I am in the world. There’s a lot more to talk about and learn about in this world, beyond myself.

What did you learn about people?

I learned that people are strong and beautiful and there’s strength everywhere in the nooks and crannies of the forgotten people of the world. That’s why hopefully somebody like Barack Obama will be in the White House to jog our memory about those other people that are being forgotten.

He cares. He doesn’t care about himself and his rich friends’ pockets. He cares about the people. You can see it. You can hear it. Some people say it’s just words, but if you don’t say it, you obviously don’t feel it or don’t think about it. So, you gotta say it first to even begin doing something about it. And Obama is the one saying it. That’s why Kennedy, King and those people made such a difference, because they said it.

Just when I thought I couldn’t like you any more …

(Laughs) Yes! Vote for Barack Obama, people! Go register to vote and vote for Barack Obama, and nobody else. Don’t even think about it! There is nobody else.

Paula Patton is one lucky woman.

I then began by asking him about his new single “Magic” and his magic touch.

What’s magic? What’s your magic touch?

Magic is love, but also it’s about not giving up on yourself and the possibilities of this beautiful world.

My magic touch is my music. That’s the best thing I can do. I’m pretty good in bed, but I think I’m better writing a song.

    What’s Paula’s magic touch?

    Her righteousness and her goodness…

You guys met when you were 14 years old.

Yeah, we just met and we were friends. It was this and it was that, the whole teenage love affair and then after she got out of college, we settled down together.

I don’t think I’ve ever dated anyone. I was a pretty fast kid.
