07.28.2008 | Interview: Robin Thicke - Singer and Songwriter
"When you first appeared on the music scene (with "When I Get You Alone"), you had a different sense of fashion. What led you to your more refined sense of style?

I think we all go through periods where we decide who we are, inside and outside. I grew long hair because I said, "I'm going to grow my hair until I hear my album on the radio." It started out as some kind of a dare to myself - like when a baseball team doesn't shave in the playoffs. I started growing my hair and everybody liked it. After I put the album out and we started going on tour, the hair became such a nuisance. I just couldn't control it, so I said, "I'm cutting this thing off." I don't really plan my life out like that. I just kind of do what I need to do to be happy."

Based off the length of your hair, at that particular point, it is quite obvious that your career wasn't an "overnight success."

Oh, yeah. I have been making music for 15 years. Everybody in the business says, "Hey, man, you never stop." I have definitely paid my dues.

In the early part of your career, you had the chance to work with Brian McKnight. What impact did that experience have on your career?

I was the young Brian McKnight wannabe. As a matter of fact, all my friends used to call me "Brian McWhite." I was so inspired by Brian McKnight's first album that I reached out to him and tried to give my music to him. I was 14 years old at the time, but he got me in the studio and he got me a record deal. I had the opportunity to work with people like Brandy and Color Me Badd when I was 16 years old. After that, I was able to be very successful in songwriting.

07.17.2008 | BET.com: Robin Thicke Embraces Change With New LP
"Judging by the title of Robin Thicke’s new project, he, along with presidential hopeful, Barack Obama is driven towards change. Something Else, Robin’s 3rd solo Lp, which is slated to hit stores September 9, exemplifies political and musical alteration. And if you let Robin dictate it, he’ll agree 100%, “It’s time for something else” he asserts. The blue eyed crooner opened up to BET.Com about the climate’s affect on his music, igniting a change and who really feels the affect of illegal downloading.

Since the success of Robin’s last effort, The Evolution of Robin Thicke, this was certified platinum in the states, Robin’s material has graced the slots of not only the Billboard 200, but also Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Hoj R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, and Hot Adult R&B Airplay. However, the meaning behind Robin’s new album title, Something Else, exemplifies the ambiance of a different artist, with a different mind frame. “I think it’s just the age of hope and change with the war, the recession and the oil crisis going on. It’s Barack Obama time; it’s time for something else, something different” Thicke said candidly.

And with the almighty dollar one of main reasons some are in the business of distributing music, Robin feels it’s time give the people what they really want, “Forget all the rules of milking people of that extra dollar because we can’t afford that anymore since we’re stealing music off the internet anyway, we might as well give them something that we need.”

Without saying, the role of music blogs in today’s budding music digital age doesn’t rub Robin so well and it’s not because his material is being unlawfully retrieved, it’s a reason many real musicians are starting to deal with. “It’s the reality of when you take advantage of the buyer and the people who make the art. Musicians don’t get barely of the money and their ones who make the music” Robin clarified. He added “A change just has to happen. The problem is that the small time musicians make all these records and don’t get their money or recognition as well the writers and performers on these actual records, those are the guys that miss out.”

With music blog sites taking a front seat to how music is presented to the masses, climate control amongst the industry is a conversation that occurs everyday. And while the climate is extremely unpredictable, Robin’s thoughts on the issue aren’t even up for discussion, “The climate has nothing to do with my music” Robin confirmed. “My music is something that people need in their life’s, so they’re going to track it down and go get it.”

Robin’s third solo offering, Something Else, is set to hit stores September 9th via Star Trek/Interscope Records." [source]

07.15.2008 | SOULFUL BLOG: Robin Thicke Follows Obama's Lead, New LP All About Change [Part 1]
Check out my two part Q&A with Robin Thicke about his new album Something Else (due out September 9th on Interscope), how Barack Obama inspired his title and his thoughts on why he’s a soul artist – not an R&B singer.

I had a chance to catch up with one of my favorite artists recently – Robin Thicke. I was a little nervous about this one, only because I am so in awe of Robin, but I quickly discovered he’s a very laid back, funny guy who isn’t afraid to share exactly how he feels about politics, music, and life.

"Soul Rebel: Why’d you call this album Something Else?

Robin Thicke: I felt that right now with the way of the world, and the way the country is, that it was time. The country is hopeful and about change and righteousness, like Barack Obama.

SR: You are an Obama supporter?

    RT: Oh yeah.

SR: Who did you work with on this album? I read that you wrote and produced all the songs?

RT: I always have written and produced all my own music, except one song I did with Pharrell. I worked with my band I was on the road with for two years and my co-producer who I’ve always worked with for eleven years. There are no collaborations as far as features.

SR: Are there any songs that are particularly special to you?

RT: There is a song called 'Dreamworld' that is about my ideal world that people are really responding to. It’s kinda bluesy and really cool. I wish you could hear it, because it sounds silly if I just explain it. It’s a song about hope and about the ideal world that I would like to live in. My version of 'If I Ruled The World.'" 07.07.2008 | Thicke Says World Needs 'Something Else'
"Hoping to repeat the success of 2006's "The Evolution of Robin Thicke," the R&B singer/songwriter will release his third album, "Something Else," on Sept. 9 via Star Trak/Interscope. The album's first single, "Magic," is currently No. 32 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

"Something Else" was produced entirely by Thicke and longtime collaborator Pro-Jay. And, unlike "Evolution," it features no guest appearances. The album, as Thicke describes it, is a cross between "classic Philly, Motown and '70s black disco meets the creativity of the Beatles and Bob Dylan."

"I felt like a lot of stuff out there sounded the same. Plus, there are a lot of things going on in the world with the recession and the war. It made me feel like everybody really just needed something new, something else," Thicke tells Billboard.com. "It's time for a change and there is hope for everyone."

Aside from "Magic," which is currently appearing in a European TV commercial for Samsung mobile phones, other songs on the set include the step track "Side Step," and the hopeful "Dream World," where Thicke croons, "idealistic world where energy falls down from the sky / and you can drive any car and drink your wine / and I could walk down the streets with my wife / and no one will look at her twice." Both songs are in contention to be the second single.

In addition, Thicke has been busy with some movie scoring, writing a novel and a screenplay, and is just wrapping up his first poetry book. As far as when any of these projects will see the light of day, Thicke says "they'll end up there. I have to enjoy and feel like I made something that deserves to be noticed. Otherwise, I don't rush my products for accolades."

"The Evolution Of Robin Thicke" has sold 1.5 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album spawned the hit "Lost Without You" which peaked at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs." [Billboard.com]

07.07.2008 | ROBIN THICKE'S GOT 'SOMETHING ELSE' FOR YOU
"Singer Robin Thicke has become a staple in contemporary soul collections. And now Thicke has another disc for music fans to add.

His third album, titled 'Something Else,' hits storees in September complemented by a promotional tour beginning in August.

Described as a 'further expansion' of his breakthrough disc, 'The Evolution of Robin Thicke,' the disc is laden with classic soul rhythms.

The first single from his latest project, called 'Magic' has already garnered strength at urban radio with its track's reminisence of Curtis Mayfield.

'It was just the inspiration of the great music of Philly and Motown and the ‘70s and Gamble and Huff,' said the platinum-selling artists of the track, as he claimed to have no particular creative process.

However, if Thicke did claim a process, it certainly started long ago.

Thicke is the son of 'Growing Pains' sitcom dad Alan Thicke, who in his own right was a musical artist and theme weaver. The elder Thicke is responsible for composing the themes of several game shows and his most memorable offerings are the TV theme songs for 'Different Strokes' and 'The Facts of Life.' But while these tunes have a certain musical longevity in pop culture, Robin Thicke’s pursuit of music was anything but pop.

'I’ve always naturally, organically been connected to soul music,' Thicke told EUR’s Lee Bailey. 'When I was 7 or 8 years old, it started with popular soul music like Michael Jackson and Prince. Then I got into Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder and then I started listening to gospel music like Commissioned, John P. Kee and the Clarke Sisters and then I got into rap music and hip hop, Mary J. Blige and Jodeci. And then I got into the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix and Curtis Mayfield.'" [Read more]

    07.04.2008 | DJ Booth Interview
"When Robin Thicke released his debut album, “A Beautiful World”, in April of 2003, he was rockin’ the Captain Jack Sparrow hairdo, sampling “A Fifth of Beethoven” and dominating the international charts with his single, “When I Get You Alone.” In October of 2006, the Los Angeles native returned with “The Evolution of Robin Thicke,” and with the help of Pharrell Williams (and a haircut), the project was platinum-certified in roughly six months.

Now, less than two years since “The Evolution,” this mega-talented, do-it-all musician is prepping the release of his third studio album, “Something Else.” Produced in-full by Thicke and his production partner, Pro Jay, the LP will possess a mostly live instrumentation feel and feature very few guest artists. Led by the current single, “Magic,” the project is currently set for release this September.

In an exclusive interview with DJBooth’s DJ “Z,” Robin steps inside the booth to talk about his constant fear of failure, past and future collaborations with Lil’ Wayne, which famous rap group was a major musical influence, and what his ‘Dream World’ looks like. " [Read/listen to interview]

07.04.2008 | Robin Thicke Discusses New Album & Who He's Voting For
"Robin Thicke is back at it. The man who made a smash next to Lil Wayne with his previous album, now hopes to recapture success with his new album, the forthcoming Something Else. He's already got one single, "Magic," out now and he's still drawing favorable comparison's to classic icons of music.

“It was just the inspiration of the great music of Philly and Motown and the ‘70s and Gamble and Huff," he recently told Eurweb of his style this go around. “It feels like when you’re making music you don’t know where it’s coming from anymore. It’s just sort of embedded in your soul."

This singer's soulful sound comes from a deep love for music. “I’ve always naturally, organically been connected to soul music,” he added. “When I was 7 or 8 years old, it started with popular soul music like Michael Jackson and Prince. Then I got into Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder and then I started listening to gospel music like Commissioned, John P. Kee and The Clarke Sisters and then I got into rap music and Hip Hop, Mary J. Blige and Jodeci. And then I got into the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix and Curtis Mayfield.”

For the latest track, "Magic," Thicke explained the political message behind the lyrics.

“I happened to have written that song when good things were happening to me and I was realizing how much greatness we all have in us and how sometimes the world tries to beat it out of us. Sometimes you’re expressing your vulnerabilities and sometimes you’re expressing your positive nature and that’s what that is. Some of us are searching for something bigger internally. I think my music tends to connect with a lot of those people that are searching for something else.”

Later, the singer also explained how his music relates to the candidate he will vote for.

“I think this music is about what [Barack] Obama represents – hope and change with a little idealism mixed in. The album is called ‘Something Else’ it represents what we’re going through as a country and a world. It’s time for change; it’s time for hope. It’s time for Barack Obama.”

The album, Something Else, is set to drop in September. " [source]
