08.28.2008 | Robin Thicke Interview With NewNowNext NOISE!

"I think we can all agree Grammy-winner Robin Thicke - son of Growing Pains' Alan, husband of actress Paula Patton - brings some sweet and smooth sounds to the worlds of R&B and new-age soul, which include 2006 ballad "Lost Without U." But I know we can all - fans and non-fans of R&B alike - agree Robin brings enough sexy for everyone's world. Overall consensus: Paula is a lucky woman.

OK, OK - I'm finished. I got the chance to talk with the very nice, very tall singer about his upcoming record and about all the straight female and gay male lust thrown his way ... and, of course, the "love-making music."

Mr. Thicke's third studio album, Something Else, hits stores in September. [source]

08.19.2008 | Live: Robin Thicke at West Hollywood House of Blues

"Thursday night at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, Robin Thicke introduced "Dream World," a track from "Something Else" (due out Sept. 9), by telling the packed room that the song is about "an ideal world with no racism and no poverty." The tune offers a few more features of Thicke's utopia: "The ice caps wouldn't be melted," and "energy would fall down from the sky." Oh, and also -- the singer "wouldn't be so damn sensitive."

    Yeah, right.

The son of "Growing Pains" star Alan Thicke and singer-actress Gloria Loring, Robin Thicke is the current king of soul-music sensitivity, a Marvin Gaye-inspired lover-not-fighter whose well-sculpted songs ripple with a tenderness that seems almost philosophical in comparison with his peers' descriptions of love in the club. Thicke's subject is romance, of course, but he roams beyond the bedroom; at the House of Blues, he dedicated "Ms. Harmony," a smooth ballad from the new album, to "the type of woman who loves herself from the inside."

"Ladies, don't stop believing in yourselves," he urged.

Call him the Oprah of R&B.

Thicke's evolved-male attitude has won him a devoted (and ethnically diverse) following; more than once Thursday he ceded lead-vocal duties to his fans, who knew every word of his songs. Fronting an agile seven-piece band, Thicke previewed material from "Something Else," including the album's lead single, "Magic," an up-tempo disco-soul romp that recalls late-'70s Michael Jackson fare such as "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."

Most of the 80-minute show, though, came from Thicke's breakthrough album, "The Evolution of Robin Thicke," which has sold more than a million copies since its release in 2006 and established his reputation as a performer after many years spent writing songs for other acts.

He decorated "Lost Without U" with tricky vocal runs in his signature falsetto. In "Complicated," he rode the band's swinging soul-funk groove with obvious glee.

Thicke sang only a couple of numbers from his underloved debut, 2003's "A Beautiful World," but they were among his strongest at the House of Blues. "Oh Shooter" (which Thicke retooled with help from rapper Lil Wayne for "Evolution") was a study in dynamics, Thicke piloting the song from a lithe R&B intro to a hard-rocking climax to a cooled-out reggae coda. And "When I Get You Alone," built atop a liberal sample from Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of Beethoven," pulsed with headstrong motion.

In addition to his own stuff, Thicke did two covers Thursday: "Brown Sugar," by the recently troubled neo-soul star D'Angelo, and "Happy Birthday," which Thicke sent out to Halle Berry, whom he pointed out in the venue's balcony. For a minute, Berry captured the crowd's attention.

Then all eyes went back to the brainy heartthrob at center stage. " [source]

08.15.2008 | Robin Thicke Croons 'Happy Birthday' for Halle Berry
"Halle Berry and beau Gabriel Aubry left baby Nahla Ariela at home to celebrate Berry's 42nd birthday at a star-studded Robin Thicke concert Thursday.

The Los Angeles House of Blues was packed with celebs (from Britney Spears to Diddy), but all eyes were on the beaming Berry as the evening culminated with Thicke delivering an a cappella version of "Happy Birthday" to the smiling star.

Berry, sipping a glass of chardonnay, looked stunning in a black cocktail dress as she and Aubry hung out with gal pals – and heavy security – at her balcony table across from Spears.

Around 11 p.m., Thicke stopped the band and announced that there was a "very special lady in the audience tonight, who's celebrating a birthday." The crooner then busted out "Happy Birthday." He finished the song imploring the crowd to, "Give it up for Halle Berry, everybody!"

The sold-out audience applauded madly as flashbulbs flashed. The lights where quickly dimmed, as Thicke moved into his hit, "Angels."

At the end of the evening, Thicke's wife Paula Patton (sitting with an energy-filled P-Diddy and his buddies who, says an onlooker, "were going crazy!") gave Berry a big hug before Berry, leading her boy Gabriel by the hand, was led to a waiting black Escalade. " [source]

08.11.2008 | Concert Review: House of Blues Anaheim

"It's easy – too easy, really, and much too lazy – to compare blue-eyed L.A. soul man Robin Thicke to that other, more popular heartthrob Justin Timberlake, and doing so anymore will get a pop scribe in trouble. More than once I've been chastised by Thicke's devotees for suggesting the lanky 31-year-old singer-songwriter was little more than an entertaining JT knockoff with a fine falsetto, no more a fresh figure for the mainstream than, oh, Elliott Yamin.

It's a mistake I won't make again – not because I fear the Thicke Army's wrath but because this son of actress-vocalist Gloria Loring and "Growing Pains" star Alan Thicke is beginning to make my earlier dismissal seem premature.

He's still not an original, nor quite the triple-threat sensation that Timberlake is. Yet Thicke's loose yet rousing performance Sunday night at a fully packed House of Blues Anaheim, a warm-up gig in anticipation of his third album, "Something Else" (due Sept. 30), capably proved that the slow-to-rise star aims for a feel distinctly different from those of his peers, a sound steeped in '70s soul more than modern R&B. (He performs again, with opening act Keri Hilson, Thursday at the House of Blues in West Hollywood.)

To varying degrees, that much was evident in the plush grooves and silken melodies of his 2006 breakthrough "The Evolution of Robin Thicke," a work that owes as much to the heady soundscapes of D'Angelo (whose sultry "Brown Sugar" was covered during Thicke's encore here) as it does the slick sheen of primo Michael Jackson. (And doesn't it say something that it claimed the Soul Train Award for best R&B/soul album by a male, a prize that, for all his Grammys, Timberlake has never picked up.)" [read more]

08.06.2008 | Robin Thicke Says 'I’ve Got To Take Chances, No Matter How Crazy I May Sound'
"R&B singer Robin Thicke cites taking chances, marriage and the drive to create music that no one can turn down – not even his label, as keys to his genre bending success.

After releasing two successful albums including the critically acclaimed 2006 album “ The Evolution of Robin Thicke,” the singer says “I might sound crazy every once in a while, [but] I’ve got to take chances as an artist” of his forthcoming album entitled “Something Else.” Looking back on his career Thicke looks to veteran artists like recent BET Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Al Green for inspiration.

“People like Prince, Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield came in and opened things up in a new way, they weren’t afraid to take a chance.”

Thicke’s chances have paid off quite well, especially after the hit single “Lost Without You” hit the top of the charts followed by the single “Can You Believe.” What may come as a surprise to many is that Robin Thicke was on his third record deal before striking gold with “The Evolution of Robin Thicke.” “I had like three deals before things finally started to work. There’s something inside of you that keeps telling you ‘you can do it’ even though there’s a lot of things and a lot of people that are trying to beat that out of you.” says Thicke who references Barack Obama’s “Yes We Can” slogan.

On his new album, Robin Thicke focuses on bringing forth quality music with songs like “Dream World” which he says is a personal favorite. “Dream World is basically about my ideal world. It’s kind of like a blues version of when Nas and Lauryn Hill did ‘If I Ruled The World’.”

In a recent interview with Singersroom, Thicke says he took a different approach to recording “Something Else.” Listening more to his surroundings and reactions, Thicke says inspiration can be drawn for songs simply by changing surroundings. Spending time in Paris and soaking up the energy of New York while working on “Something Else” Thicke was able to write about what people are going through, “You can’t say ‘oh, I got to be in the studio at nine o’clock because I go to write a hit. It doesn’t work like that” he says. “When Al Green wrote ‘Love and Happiness’ he was going through love and happiness.”

Despite the push to create a ton of radio hits Thicke says he would rather make music that people can connect with rather than focusing on what’s going to become a radio hit. He also knows that people are not going to buy garbage when they have real things to worry about like gas prices, jobs, and rising bills to pay.

“You got to make something hot, [people] don’t’ have time for no garbage” says Thicke who credits 2008's top selling artist and collaborator Lil Wayne for changing the game. “You’ll never hear Wayne quit, he’s not trying to milk you for extra dollars. He’s giving you free stuff then coming out with a hot album and doing shows.”

When its all said and done, Thicke says “Ain’t no amount of money going to make you happy if your home ain’t right” when asked about his marriage and the effects of being married in the entertainment industry. “She’s my roll dog” he says of his wife. “I see my relationship with her as being so much past being married, when we’re together she makes me forget about everything.”"

08.05.2008 | Robin Thicke: Make Something Hot!
"The term “blue-eyed soul” is often used when speaking of Robin Thicke. But if you do use that term to categorize the California native you take away from him as an artist and the genre. After two albums released to critical acclaim, and hits like “Lost Without You,” one would think he’s earned the right to be mentioned without the “blue-eyed” prefix. But just incase there are any doubters left to question if he’s worthy, Robin Thicke is preparing to release his third album entitled Something Else. Soul music is heartfelt. Soul music evokes emotion. And that’s just what Mr. Thicke does.

Singersroom: Your last album, The Evolution of Robin Thicke, was art imitating life in that you went from the bohemian look from the first album, A Beautiful World, to the clean cut, ladies man on Evolution. Can fans expect a new evolution with the release of this next album?

Robin Thicke: Besides the outfits and the haircut, we always go through phases where we’re wearing different jackets and trying on new sneakers. The long hair was just me expressing myself in my bohemian way. After that you get a little older, you got bills to pay and you have to take care of your responsibilities. I don’t plan things out really. I make decisions and do what I need to do so that I can be happy. This new album is kind of a mix of both of those. It’s got the freedom of the first album and the soul of the second album."
